The final of the Club Men’s 1-8 Singles was between Ned Maranic and Michael Jelley who still had two lives remaining. Ned began holding a slight edge but Michael’s consistency had him holding good shots on many of the later ends. Ned responded with good run shots on two ends to keep in touch, but Michael’s draw shots won him through at 21-16.
Eight of our 1-8 Men subsequently played in the Auckland 1-8 Singles competition. Kaarem Al Darra, John Crow and Michael Jelley won through to post section play. All three reached the quarter finals. Kaarem Al Darra went down 19-21 after fighting back from a very slow start. Unfortunately Michael and John played off in this round with Michael winning 21-12. Michael’s semi final against a Mt Wellington opponent developed into a cracker of a game. Michael forged into an 8-0 lead but was only one point ahead after the 20th end. A subsequent three shots got him to a 20-15 lead. However his opponent made a superb fight back to end up winning the game 21-20, the only time he managed to get ahead of Michael, who was so close to a winning shot with his last bowl.
